Viewing "other" consol screens via SSH ...

Postby bob selby » Wed Sep 03, 2014 2:30 am

Hi,

When I am at home I can view the other screens using ALT+F1 to ALT+F8 - a very useful feature.

However, when I "tunnel" into my 04x box from work using PUTTY and SSH this doesn't seem to work.

This may be by design - but is it possible to do something similar via PUTTY + SSH ??

TIA
Bob

Sorry, I should have done a search first!! :-(

Topic http://www.freesco.org/support-forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=17309&p=94781&hilit=screens&sid=79379cf0305281dd690063410b299fc4&sid=79379cf0305281dd690063410b299fc4#p94781 seems to give me most of what I need.

But what about F8 ???? - it's the traffic monitor screen.

TIA

The program that displays the network traffic is called "netmon" and you can see a screen capture that is updated every 30 seconds by viewing /var/netmon.log
However if you need to see it live through SSH then you can start the program manually from the console with "netmon". The down side of this is that you will not get the proper maximum bandwidth as the program has just been started. You will also have to use "CRTL+c" to stop it. So it is best just to view the file. This display usually shows on screen 6 tty6

As for screen 8 tty8 has never been used by the system. Although there are some packages that use it. So I would need to know the name of the package to help further.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.

The program on tty8 is "iftop" - and that works if I run it manually.

The stats are not going to be particularly accurate - but that doesn't really matter too much - I just need an indication.

Thanks.
