The time server in 4.x ...

Postby bob selby » Fri Feb 14, 2014 6:46 pm

Can someone explain how this works ... it is configured with an external url ... and it is reflected into the internal networks how?

Is it distributed in the DHCP responses? or do the internal systems assume to use the gateway IP address?

I have an internet radio box that seems to be continually trying to get the time and failing ... what are the likely causes for this?

Could it be that the firewall's time server is interfearing with the box trying it's own timeserver URL??

TIA

The time server of FREESCO is not using NTP protocol. Basically it hosts the time and date via a CGI script. The accuracy is therefore in seconds, whereas NTP protocol is much much more precise

A special client is required to collect the time and date. A windows client is included (freeTimeClient_0.91.zip) as well as a linux client (linux-time-client.tgz) for both libc5 as libc6 systems. Make sure to read the 'readme.1st' included in the tarball.

You probably need to configure the internet radio to synchronize to a public NTP server near your location.
Have a look at http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/

Sadly, the internet radio is not configurable in that regard :-(

Would installing the ntp-4.1.1-lightning.pkg help ?? (This package currently fails the MD5 check on install)

Best regards,

Yes, it would solve the issue. As for failing the md5 check sum I am not sure why. Try installing it with this command
Code: Select all
pkg  -i http://lewys-spot.dyndns.org/packages/0.4.x/ntp-4.1.1-lightning.pkg

Also make sure that you add the timezone file to your system in the /boot/tmz directory and reboot.

I downloaded the pkg directly from (I think) your site and installed it manually - and it went OK.

Maybe the copy on one of the mirrors is bad.

All working now - ta

My site "lewys-spot" is where all of the lightning packages and 99% of all 04x packages originate from, so everything else is a copy. I will update the package so that it will propagate through all of the servers.
