Hostname

Postby syscon456 » Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:55 pm

Does the freesco setting in DHCP (static IP)
enforces "hostname" on my machine?

I have in there for eg.
host syscon5 {
fixed-address 10.0.0.110;

will this setting enforce the name of my machine hostname=syscon5 ?

Yes as long as the DNS server in FREESCO is used by your local network.

I've disabled DNS server, reboot the firewall but it did not help.
When I booted my computer it showed "joseph@syscon5"
instead of setting from my box: localhost
/etc/conf.d/hostname
hostname="localhost"

When I disabled static address entry in DHCPD server I got a "localhost" but when I obtain the address via DHCPD my host gets name "syscon5"
By the way I still use 0.3.8 version.

Ok there was a miss understanding here.

First you have a Linux client
Second you don't want it to resolve to a name.
Third you are just talking about a single client and not other clients resolving the name.

To resolve what you are asking all you need to do is just let the client use a dynamic DHCP lease. Otherwise give the machine a name and use that name. As for "localhost" it will always resolve to the machines own internal IP address of 127.0.0.1 and it will always work regardless. If you have other programs that use localhost that are not working then it is most likely due to some other issue that can still be resolved even with a name.

In order to resolve problems we really have to have the details of the problem over a general area question about a single operation.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.
