Anyone with 043 on FAT drive (Windows or DOS)?

Postby Island » Sun Sep 25, 2011 1:28 pm

May I ask for a little information from anyone running 043 on a FAT or FAT32 drive (ie, starting from DOS or Windows)? I'm getting errors installing 043 to my HD, while 042 runs fine. 043 does not load, saying

Code: Select all
Kernel panic: VFS, cannot mount root FS on device 01:00

Lewis advises that 01:00 is the (initial) ramdisk, the file named 'ramdisk' in the c:\router directory, and is the second file loaded, after the kernel. One of the first things the initial sequence tries to do is mount a root filesystem using the filesystem contained within the ramdisk.

Having checked and rechecked the hardware, memory, disk partitions (there are four partitions on this box), and the integrity of the files (I can mount the 043 ramdisk as a loop device under 042, but if I try to start 042 using the 043 ramdisk, as an experiment, the kernel panics again), I'm trying to drill down into what might be causing the problem. I've noticed some strange (to me) messages on the screen but I don't know whether these are 'normal' in 043, or whether they are helping to point to the problem. During loading, these messages appear on the screen:

Code: Select all
kernel: hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4
[MS-DOS FS rel 12, FAT 0, check=n, conv=b, uid=0, gid=0, umask=022, bmap]
[me=0x0, cs=0, #f=0, fs=0, fl=0, ds=0, de=0, data=0, se=0, ts=0, ls=0, rc=0, fc=4294967295]
Transaction block size = 512
kernel: UMSDOS Beta 0.6 (compatibility level 0.4, fast msdos)
[MS-DOS FS rel 12, FAT 0, check=n, conv=b, uid=0, gid=0, umask=022, bmap]
[me=0x0, cs=0, #f=0, fs=0, fl=0, ds=0, de=0, data=0, se=0, ts=0, ls=0, rc=0, fc=4294967295]
Transaction block size = 512
[MS-DOS FS rel 12, FAT 0, check=n, conv=b, uid=0, gid=0, umask=022, bmap]
[me=0x0, cs=0, #f=0, fs=0, fl=0, ds=0, de=0, data=0, se=0, ts=0, ls=0, rc=0, fc=4294967295]
Transaction block size = 512
Kernel panic: VFS, unable to mount root FS on 01:00

Yes, those MSDOS messages repeat three times; that seems odd. 042, on the other hand, gives this sequence in the log at time of loading:

Code: Select all

kernel: Partition check:
kernel:  hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4
kernel: RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
kernel: VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
kernel: VFS: Can't find an ext2 filesystem on dev 03:01.
kernel: UMSDOS Beta 0.6 (compatibility level 0.4, fast msdos)
rc_masq: start

With no detail reports about the MSDOS partitions etc.

Could one or two of the folk who are running 043 on FAT partitions be kind enough to post an extract of their log, not the whole thing, just the short section between the partition check, and rc_masq start (see below), so that I can see what an 043 log should show at this point when it's working ok?

Code: Select all

kernel: Partition check:
.....
.....
.....
.....
rc_masq: start

I'd be very grateful. Very many thanks, regards, Island
