I'm thinking of making a small small 386 based web-portal for controlling certain apliances (fish tank, coffee pot, lights ... ). This should be possible with Apache/php/cgi 'n 'stuff' ;)
What I am missing is an command line program that does two things:
1. sets LPT pins to a desired value
2. reads values of the LPT pins

A Freesco compilation of one of these progz would suffice:
- lptout
- parashell

Please help.

Have you looked at the x10.com products? There is a Linux program called bottlerocket that can control the x10 firecracker interface.

There is a product called "Siteplayer" that can do exactly what you are asking for. It is a very small stand alone webserver with I/O, serial port(s), and ethernet all onboard. It does not use much power. It is also pretty inexpensive.
